When choosing a drum set and which ones we want for our band the very first thing we need to consider is the types of brands we will be dealing with. For the most part as a musician, for me there are 3 top drum set brands, Pearl, Tama, and Yamaha. Each brand is going to give you a different type of sound and come with certain adjustments and hardware of course.
Anyone of these types of drum sets is going to make a good choice. When obtaining your first drum kit, try to make sure all of the pieces were created by the same manufacturer. If not, there could be compatibility issues. Secondly most kits come with 4-5 pieces, don’t go about adding new pieces unless you are an experienced drummer. The reason you see professional drummers with multiple pieces is simple, they learned the hard way through years of practice. If initially setup with more pieces than you can imagine, you’re going to hit them regardless even if you don’t intend to. My advice here is to keep it simple if you’re just starting out.
If you are serious about your drumming, I don’t recommend buying used pieces, only due to the fact that you have no idea how they were treated and the real condition they are in.
Lastly, make sure your set comes with a high quality bass pedal. Starting with a good pedal will save you money in the long run and out last the beginner pedals that come with kits.
Becoming proficient on the drums takes years of practice and patience, eventually you will get there.
